Position Reports

  • President: Continue to support JET awareness; raise funds; new trip
  • VP / Secretary: Taking minutes and learning the position
  • Treasurer: 1 st May 2008 $14,247.05, plus $2,298.85, totaling $16,545.90 to come for 2007-08 GIA in account. Need to pay Register General fees and list of Yearly Events
  • Social Coordinator:
    • Candle Fest will be in September or October, Vanessa will attend meetings
    • O-Shaberikai is next week Wednesday 28 th May 2008, JALTs are welcome
    • Trivia Night is hoping to raise $300-400 at PJ O'Reilleys
    • Trips are planned to Sydney and possibly Young for cherry picking
  • Newsletter / Webmaster: Drop newsletter and make website better
    • Use $120 per quarter from Embassy for the website awaiting Embassy approval on this
    • Articles, JALT Essays will be taken from the Yahoo Group and put online
    • Include Committee member profiles: photo and background
      • Where are you from?
      • Where were you in Japan ?
      • What's your role?
      • What do you want to do with your role?
    • Website can support Japanese text, and put links to learn Japanese, Japanese news streams, YouTube movies of interest and an Australian Dollar to Japanese Yen conversion tool
    • Put weekly email on the website
    • Aler to create Facebook group
  • Orientation Coordinator: Arrange 2 or 3 times to meet new JETs
    • Cultural Evening with kimonos, tea ceremony, Sumo, festivals, food
    • Need help to teach Japanese and self introductions
    • Lucy has orientation materials from previous years
    • Keith gave a manual previously used for Departing JETs

  • Orientation for Departing JETs
    • Q&A Session at Japanese Embassy 26 th June 2008
    • Suggestion made for a Meet & Greet 18 th June at Ailsa's UniLodge, still to be advised
  • Trivia Night: Monday 21 st July at PJ O'Reilleys around 7:30pm
    • Set up a meeting next week with Subcommittee
    • About 3 meetings required to finalise questions
  • Sydney Trip: Weekend of 6 th to 7 th September 2008
    • Invite Sydney JETAA and CLAIR members
    • Dinner at Japanese restaurant or Izakaya along Dickson Street
    • Karaoke World
    • One night in hotel
    • JETAA Canberra will pay accommodation, dinner and karaoke for JALTs
    • Pay 50% the cost for JETAA members
    • No subsidy for non-members, but welcome to come along
    • Korean Bath House on Sunday
  • Hanami at Floriade: 12 th September Picnic at Nara Koen Details TBD
  • Candle Fest: Need to set a date
    • JALTs can help
    • Consider a ticket system for dealing with cash
    • Water supply issue: Who's responsible to ensure there's enough water?
    • Invite Sydney JETAA and put them up
  • Young Trip: Day Trip for Wine Tasting and Cherry Picking around November
  • Multi Cultural Festival: Plan for a date in early February
    • Only group to represent Japan last year
    • Cans, not bottles of beer will be permitted ? to be confirmed
    • Need more people throughout the day

Other Business

  • Bank Account Signatories: Murray, Lucy, Andrea; Ailsa to be signed on
  • Incorporation ACT responsibility
  • Lanyon High Scholarship Donation:
    • Christie will be taking 13 students to Japan and has requested an amount of $100 or $200 per student
    • Discussion as to how to what amount will be given and on what grounds we are donating this money
    • Community based outreach
    • JET Program promotion
    • Have the kids write about their experiences for the website and help at Candle Fest
    • Voting on the following amounts for donation: $1,000 (1 vote); $1,300 (2 votes); $1,500 (6 votes)
    • JETAA Canberra will donate $1,500 to Lanyon High School 's Japan Excursion
    • Possibilities for future endorsements may include special fundraisers
  • Oceania Regional Conference:
    • Dates changed due to Melbourne Cup
    • Suggestions are for 10-12 October or 14-16 November
    • JETAA Canberra will send two people ? a recent returnee and a committee member
    • Transport, meals and accommodation will be covered
  • T Shirts: Aler will design a graphic, Ewan will ask his Mum about printing
  • JETAA Promotional Competition:
    • Competition to design a logo to be put on T Shirts, Pins and Ties
    • Possibility of making one common logo for all JETAAs in Australia using the Sakura logo
  • Chapter Report: Due 15 th July, Andrea will write the report concerning our network and our activities. A template will be sent out
  • Embassy of Japan Job Offer: Information and Cultural Officer, Details have been sent out to members via the Weekly Email
